Does Quest offer text to speech and colour overlays?
Where text to speech currently stands, and how to use colour overlays for candidates who need them.
Text to speech
Quest Progress, our in-classroom software, has text to speech, but Quest Admissions does not yet. We have built the underlying feature, but quality assuring a reader across the tens of thousands of possible questions from 7+ to 16+ is a significant piece of work, and an error in a live entrance assessment would matter a great deal to a candidate. It is being tested this year with a view to launching next. In the meantime, the most common approach for a candidate who needs a reader is to work with an in-person reader in a separate room.
Colour overlays
Colour overlays are usually available in the accessibility settings of the device the candidate is using, and most modern laptops and tablets offer them. If the device does not, there are free browser plug-ins that apply a colour overlay across the whole screen, including the candidate's test. One option is ColorVeil, a free plug-in for Chrome and Edge that lets you apply a specific colour tint. As a low-tech alternative, you can also buy physical coloured screens that sit over the monitor. Whichever route you take, it is worth confirming the most suitable setting with your SENDCo or the family.
