Quest assessments come in two formats.
An adaptive exam adjusts to the candidate as they go. As they answer, the difficulty of the following questions adapts to their responses, which lets the exam home in on a candidate's level efficiently. Maths is a typical adaptive subject.
A non-adaptive exam presents a fixed set of questions to every candidate, and they can usually move between questions and review their answers. This suits assessments where reading in a natural order matters, such as English comprehension, and formats where candidates benefit from navigating freely, such as Puzzles and Problem Solving. This also helps minimise the impact of early mistakes, which are harder to recover from in a short assessment.
Both formats are carefully standardised, so a candidate's result is comparable either way.
